Alaska walked into the bar, watching the people around her, some trying to pick up girls, some playing pool, and some just sitting by themselves. She walked up to the bar and sat on stool, facing the bartender.
"Hey bud, gimme a beer." She smiled at the middle aged man, and his face warmed.
"Sure thing Alaska." He handed her a beer, twisting off the top. Alaska had been at the academy for 6 months, but the bartender and her had become fast friends. "What's on your mind?"
"What's always on my mind, Bruce?" She took a drink of the beer, "When will this place not suck?"

Gus sauntered into the bar, his bag slung over his shoulder. He cut through the crowd of people doing things he wouldn't care to explain. As if he could anyway.
He sat at the bar, settling himself next to a girl at the bar. She ordered a beer so casually as if it was just human nature for her.
"I'll have whatever she's having," Gus called over to the bartender, pointing to the girl. "Thanks."
He snuck a quick glance at her, figuring she was the feisty type. "You know, you look a little young," he told her, trying to make conversation.

Alaska looked at the boy next to her and cocked her head. He was cute. Very very cute.
"I also look a little uninterested." She smirked at him, and watched Bruce place a beer in front of him. She smiled at Bruce. "Can we get a shot?"
"Who are you, anyway?" She took a drink of her beer. He hadn't been there long, she'd sure as hell never seen him.

Augustus let out a laugh. "Unfortunately. I don't know if you're waiting for me to make a cheesy pick up line or get straight to the point where I'd just take you back to my room, but neither of those will happen," he said, twisting off the top of his beer and taking a large swig. "I'm just trying to make conversation, seeing as we could be here for a while."
Gus raised his eye brows as she requested a shot. At least he knew who wanted to get straight to the point.
"Augustus Waters. I'm a bit new here, if it wasn't obvious," he spoke. "And you, my dear?"

She didn't know what to think. She couldn't help but grin at his blunt explanation. "Well played, kid." She took a drink of her beer as Bruce brought two shots of tequila to her, her personal favorite, along with two pieces of lime and a salt shaker.
"Bottoms up?" She handed him his shot. She licked the salt off her hand, threw back the tequila, then bit down on the lime. She flinched, then smiled.
"I'm Alaska Young," She held out her delicate hand, "I'm a bit old here."

"Kid?" Gus asked, raising his eyebrows. "I'm nineteen, and we all know you aren't close. So who'd you get to make your fake ID?"
Augustus watched intently as she executed a routine she probably did dozens of times. He grinned at her and then repeated the same process.
"Alaska," he murmured. "Nice name, kid." He winked at her and went back to his beer.

"Not close is a relative term, m'dear." She smiled at him, and drank the last of her beer. "Kid in 8B." She smiled at him. "
She watched him take the shot, and she chuckled. "DO you drink much, Augtustus Waters?"
"Thanks." She raised her eyebrows, "I guess the kids with wired names have to stick together?"

"I suppose," Gus shrugged. He nodded his head in an approving manner. "I see. Might have to knock on his door one day."
Augustus turned towards her. "Well, I don't. But I see you do, Miss Alaska Young," he told her. "Figured I've been through hell this week so, might as well get a drink to calm down."
"No problem," he grinned. "And I guess they do. The normal kids wouldn't understand anyway."

"You're 19?" She raised an eyebrow at him, "What do you need an ID for?"
"Yes, yes I do." She smiled, "I figure I might as well, we're gonna die anyway, why not go out fun?" She made eye contact with Bruce and waved him over, asking him to get her another beer. "It's not my business to ask whats going on is it?"
"Right, normal's vastly overrated anyway." She winked.

"Well," he spoke. "You do need to be twenty to own a gun."
"Good quote to live by," Gus told her, mentally jotting this down. "And it's whatever. Uh, just a close friend. He uhm, passed away. Yeah a few weeks ago. I told him drinking and driving was bad. Fucking hell, Tyler. I told you," Augustus screamed through gritted teeth. He brought his fist down on the bar, tears threatening to fall.
"I'm sorry. That was...it won't happen again," he assured her, faking a smile.
"That's true. Why be like everyone else when you can be you?" he asked, looking down at his beer.

"You didn't strike me as the sharp shooting type." She made her hands into "guns" and grinned.
She took a drink of her beer, and watched his mini-episode. "Dude. It's alright. You'll be okay. People do stupid shit." She felt awkward and didn't know what to do. She jumped when he brought his fist down onto the bar. She put her hand gently on his shoulder and smiled. "It's okay."
"No worries, it's okay, we've all got skeletons, it's okay." She shook her head, "By the way, no need to be fake with me."
"I completely agree." She grinned at him.

"Yeah well, never know if someone could sneak up on you, m'dear," he told her, chuckling at her actions.
"Yeah, I guess. He was a good guy though," Gus informed her. "I really miss him. Feels weird without him." He looked over his shoulder to see Alaska's hand there. "Thanks though."
"I suppose," Augustus murmured. "And I'm not big on crying. Especially in front of cute girls. Just, not okay for me."
"I knew you would," he smirked.

She smiled, "I guess you're right, Augustus."
"I believe you. I've lost people too." She looked down, twirling her beer around, before taking a drink. "It's part of life, I guess." She offered a small smile. "No problem, kid." She winked, knowing her use of kid was obviously not true.
"I'm cute?" She raised her eyebrows. "Cute's not usually what I get, but I'll take it." She took a sip of her beer, "You're not hard to look at either, by the way."
"How do you already know me so well?" She smiled at him, tilting her head slightly.

"When am I not right?" he asked, a serious look on his face.
"Life. It sucks, that's what it is," Gus murmured, finishing the last drops of his beer. "I wish it wasn't."
"Kid? Listen, if I am a kid, then you are a fetus. That's all," he informed her, grinning widely.
"And yes. I figure beautiful is over the line," he shrugged. "And I figured. I am a model after all."
Gus bit his lip in thought. "Maybe because we're so alike."

She tried to keep her face straight, but chuckled.
"Life's a bitch, then you die. I think we all wish it didn't work that way, but it does, that's why when we die, it's just better. There's so much beyond this labyrinth." She shrugged. "Bruce, one more for this guy."
"I am a measly two years younger than you, I don't think that fetus is a proper term." She raised her eyebrows at him and took a sip.
"Beautiful? Beautiful is flattery. Not over the line, just a mask for your true intentions." She winked at him.
"That makes sense." she found herself studying his face, and the way he was biting his lip. You have a boyfriend. She pushed back the stupid voice in her mind.
