"Good words to live by, Alaska," he told her, nodding as she got him another drink.
"It definitely is," Gus argued. "And two years is a lot."
"I enjoy looking at beautiful people, and I decided a while ago not to deny myself the simpler pleasures of existence," Augustus told her. "Doesn't mean anything further than that. I go by personality. If you happen to be beautiful, well that is an added bonus."
Gus muttered a thank you as the bartender handed him another beer. "It very well does."

"I feel as though I'm wise beyond my years." She chuckled, and took a drink.
"It is not, you, Augustus Waters are overdramatic." She pointedly looked at him, narrowing her eyes.
She couldn't stop the smile that was creeping onto her face, or the blush. "Those, too, are good words to live by." She took a large drink of her beer, "So you like my personality?" She laughed, "People are so quick to call me a bitch because I see the world a little differently."

"I'd actually agree with that statement," Gus nodded.
"It is. You, Alaska Young, are not dramatic enough," he told her, mirroring her narrowed eyes.
"I see you're blushing," Augustus pointed out, taking a sip of beer. "Don't hide it.
He leaned on the bar, arms crossed over his chest. "I do," he laughed. "Not a bitch, just, interesting and unique. You choose to think about the world instead of going with the flow. You know, what everyone else thinks of it. I admire that."

"Glad to know," She smiled. This wasn't normal. Alaska didn't just get along with people that easily.
She fought the sudden urge to kiss him, but fought it, taking a swig of her beer. "I beg to differ."
"I do not blush." She rolled her eyes, "You've only slightly raised my average body temperature with your flattery. Blush? Hardly a correct term."
"Well I'm glad somebody sees things the way that I do." She leaned on the bar, facing him, her head resting on one of her hands. "I need some fresh air." She hopped off her barstool, and turned to him, "You coming or not?"

"A life without drama is a boring life indeed," Gus informed her, running a hand through his hair.
"You do blush. That, my dear, is a damn lie. Hell, even I blush," he explained, finishing the last drops of beer. "And have I? Hm."
"We've got a lot in common, Miss Alaska Young," Augustus told Alaska. "I'm coming. Don't worry." He stood up and followed behind her, his eyes flicking downward every so often.

"I do not blush." She insisted, tilting her head up slightly. "Don't let it get to your head, babe."
"That I believe. I just don't..." She paused, "Get why....it doesn't happen often." She grinned at him, and walked out the door. She felt his eyes briefly on her, but tried not to let her cheeks burn any hotter.
She reached into her jacket pocket and pulled out a pack of cigarettes, taking on and lighting it before holding the open pack out to Augustus.

"You do," he argued. "And I won't. Well, too much."
"Maybe I'm the one," he purred in her eye. Augustus pulled back and smirked at Alaska before exiting and closing the door behind him. He knew she could feel his eyes on her and he also had a feeling she was fighting off a blush.
He took a cigarette from the pack and placed it between his lips. He didn't light it though.
"How can you smoke, Miss Young?" he questioned, eyeing her lit cigarette.

"I can actually see your head inflating as I speak." She smirked.
Alaska shivered, feeling his breath hit her skin. "The one? A little early, kid." She grinned.
"Need a light?" She held out the lighter for him, waiting for him to take it.
"What do you mean, Mister Waters?" She chuckled, "Some smoke for fun. Me?" She blew out a stream of smoke rings, "I smoke to die."

"Can you?" Gus asked, taking out his phone to see his reflection. "Damn, I was hoping it wasn't noticeable."
"Kid? Oh come on," he whined. "I thought we talked about this."
Alaska offered Augustus a light but he respectfully declined. "No, I don't smoke. It's a metaphor, see: you put the killing thing right between your teeth but you don't give it the power to do its killing.”
He raised his eyebrows before taking the box of remaining cigarettes and putting them in his pocket. "I definitely wouldn't want that to happen."

"Well, you're certainly whining like a kid." She raised her eyebrows at him.
She furrowed her eyebrows at him, he was definitely different than anyone she'd ever met. "That takes a lot of will power and faith in a humanity that doesn't deserve it." She shrugged, "To each their own I suppose."
"Hey!" She lunged forward, trying to snatch them back. "I can die if I want! This world is so cold and cruel and bad things happen to good people and people die and that's the next adventure Augustus. The great beyond, the great perhaps." She felt herself babbling but still clutching his arm tightly. SHe felt tears stinging the back of her eyes.

"Maybe," he told her.
"And I give people a lot of credit. Not always a good thing, but still," Gus explained.
As she lunged forward, he stepped back. "Alaska. What about those who have cancer or something other than that? They don't want to die, but they have no say. Listen," he said, wrapping his arms around her and bringing her close. "Life is the greatest gift anyone could have. You get no second chances. You die and then what? What if there's nothing after that like you thought? And what about those who want you here? Like me."
Gus held Alaska in his arms for a while before placing a kiss on top of her head.

"You're definitely unlike anyone I've ever met." She searched his face for a brief moment.
"Augustus. I don't know why I do the things I do. I hate this. I hate living, I hate smoking and drinking I do it because I hate it. Don't you get it?" In her head she sounded tough and scary but her voice was wavering violently. His warmth was engulfing her and she couldn't decide if she felt comforted or suffocated. "There has to be, or else, why do we suffer this way?" She decided it was comfort, and let her head rest against his chest. "Why would you want me around when I don't?"

"Is that good or bad?" he questioned.
"You do it to feel something. Because you can," he explained, his voice soft. "To feel like you're actually alive and not some lost soul wandering around." He stood still with her as Alaska let her head rest against his chest. He stroked her hair softly.
"Not everyone suffers. But the ones who do are meant to be strong and independent. And look at you, my dear. That's exactly what you are," Augustus told her. "And I want you around because you're my friend. You're smart and gorgeous and definitely meant for something great."

"Not sure I've decided yet." She smiled at him.
"But it hurts, Augustus." She shook her head. "I failed. I couldn't save her. I can't save anyone." She fought back the tears that were threatening to fall. "Wandering is all I've ever done. It's all I know."
"This world is full of people who can't take the suffering, those people leave this world. I can't be one of them." She argued with herself at this point, "But I don't know what I can do." She looked at him, and took her chance. He wanted her to live, so here went nothing.
Alaska lifted her head and kissed him. She let her lips linger for a couple seconds before pulling away.
"I'm not the great one in this equation, Augustus, you are." She gave him a small smile, wiping away the small tear that escaped.

"Let me know when you do, okay?" he asked.
"Alaska, save who? And I guarantee you couldn't have stopped it. Babe," he spoke, holding her face in his hands. "You can save people. Just not everyone. And no. Not at all. You're a person, a great one. You are not a wanderer."
Once she pressed a kiss to his lips, Augustus smiled and pulled her closer.
"Don't doubt yourself," he told her, pulling her close again.
